When it comes to keyword selection, for most persons it is a case targeting the most popular long tail keywords. The problem with that is, most persons are already targeting those keywords and ranking for them may be as difficult as ranking for a one word keyword.
A smarter approach is going after keywords with about 50-200 exact monthly searches or thereabouts. When you go after and rank for a number of such terms, the ancillary traffic you get from crossover search terms can add up quickly and help you to rank.
So it all begins with selecting a four-word plus specific keyword around which to build your post.
Now you have your keyword, I guess the next step is plaster your keywords all over your post, right?

Optimal positions for your keyword include the title, in the URL, first paragraph and last paragraph of your post. You should also use it as the alternate text of the main image.
I have to add a word of caution, though. You need to be smart in implementing your keyword placements. Do not sacrifice the readability of your blog posts for the sake of keyword optimization. If it sounds false, it probably is.
To balance things up, use LSI keywords to make your post read more naturally. To get LSI keywords for your primary keyword, enter your primary keyword as the search term inside Google keyword tool and check out the associated keywords that are displayed. Those are keywords that Google’s algorithm have related with your keyword,
You also have to analyze what keywords brings in the most traffic. Regularly check website traffic online in your analytics account. See the keywords tab.
Interlink with your anchor texts
Just as with keywords, Google uses both your outbound and internal links to relate what your blog post is about. When a post links to other content, the linking pattern creates a semantic relationship that helps associate the post with a particular keyword.
Are you linking internally enough?
If you write about any topic often enough, create a landing page for that topic and link to it from all new posts your write on that topic. Of course, the anchor text to your landing page should be keyword rich.
All the pages going to your landing page will communicate to Google that the page is as important as they thought in the first place, guaranteeing search engine traffic for your blog in the future.
